“Exploring Havana’s Black Renaissance”
Presenter: Dr. Juanamaria Cordones Cook, Associate Professor
Date: Wednesday, November 18
Time: 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Location: Gentry Hall Rm 323
Dr. Cordones Cooke will present a panoramic view of her research on Afro-Latin American literature and culture with concentration on Afro-Cuban writers and artists. She will focus on a group she has designated Havana’s Black Renaissance, a generation of extraordinary authors and artists who came of age with the Cuban Revolution and whose artistic contributions still remain unmatched in Latin America.
During her presentation she will address the development of her different projects –books, special collections, videos and documentaries-- and she will share a short “demo” of a documentary she has filmed in Havana with Imágenes del Caribe, an independent Havana based video production group that specializes on themes of the African diaspora in the Caribbean.
