Why Black Studies: Testimonials
My undergraduate education at Mizzou was transformative for me; it gave me myself, in a way I didn't know education could. That was largely due to the courses I took through the Black Studies program. The courses, and the affiliated faculty, were diverse in perspective, creative, and engaging, and gave me answers to questions I'd been asking for a very long time, which no one had been able to answer in a meaningful way up to that point. It gave me the story of Emmett Till and a better understanding of the racial dynamics I'd observed in my small Missouri town growing up. It gave me Langston Hughes' America and a patriotism I felt matched my own, "let America be America again, the land that never has been yet and yet must be." It gave me what was to become my home discipline of Sociology, and a career that lets me pass on the transformative educational experience I received. What an unbelievable gift.
