Sankofa Scholars Program

Sankofa Scholars is the nation's first open-access scholars' program, dedicated to providing the academic and social capital to all students who wish to pursue academic success.

Participation in Sankofa Scholars Program is open to any MU student who wants to take advantage of program's designed workshops, mentoring, and engagement to enhance their academic achievement and realize their success.

Sankofa offers a rotating series of weekly study skills development workshops, individualized sessions focusing on student-specific needs, and the program's guidance through pathways to enrich and expand your engagement with the activities that can ensure your growth and utilization of academic skill-sets..

Workshops/Weekly Focus Sessions will concentrate on one of five themes:

Sankofa Bird -- Looking back so that we may succeed ahead
Sankofa -- Looking Back so we may Succeed Ahead
  • How to be an ACTIVE LEARNER
  • How to STUDY LIKE A PRO
  • Becoming an ACE TEST-TAKER
  • Staying MOTIVATED in a college and covid environment
  • Making the most of your FINAL EXAMS and PROJECTS

Students who wish to pursue the Scholars' program must agree to do all of the following in a semester, which, once completed, will lead to the Department announcing their status as a Sankofa Scholar.

  1. Participate in one Sankofa Scholar–Faculty Mentor One-on-One Meeting (30 minutes)
  2. Participate in two Sankofa Scholar Academic Workshops (50 minutes each)
  3. Submit their resume to the DUGS for review and comments and make suggested edits and changes (approx. 50 minutes)
  4. Attend two co-curricular campus-wide events focused on Black Studies or topics that are central to the field (approx. 90 mins each)
  5. Attend the Department of Black Studies End-of-Semester Celebration held on Reading Day

Becoming a Sankofa Scholar is an important and vital high-impact activity that can serve as the catalyst for your future academic and post-MU success.
